Race Rules
First Annual 5-Mile Kayak Race
Three Classes
Women’s Competition, Men’s Competition and
Touring
Registrants will self-select their class.
The Race Committee reserves the right to re-assign racers
if it feels that one’s class is inappropriate.
Markings
Every boat entered in the race must display its
race number on the hull near the bow.
A number sheet showing the class and number will be supplied during
registration.
It is up to the entrant to supply tape and secure the number sheet
near the bow on the port side.
Rules of the Race
Keep to the left side of the Channel.
All boats in opposing directions should pass with the other boat
to starboard.
There are two marks, one off of Winter Island, and one near Forest
River.
Both marks will be rounded to starboard; that is, the rounding will
be a clockwise motion relative to the mark,
with the exception that the Winter Island mark is rounded counterclockwise
on the returning leg.
Overlaps at the mark must be respected.
Any following boat having established an overlap will be allowed
room at the mark by the leading boat.
Collisions are not allowed.
If this rule is violated, the responsible boat must paddle 10 meters
off the course,
perform a 360-degree turn or a roll, and then may continue the race.
Starting
All Competition class boats will be allowed to launch
off the beach 15 minutes before the start.
The Competition class race will commence at the sound of the starting
signal, approximately 1300 hours.
The Touring class will then enter the water, and the starting signal
will be 10 minutes after the Competition start.
Finishing
The finish line is the same as the starting line.
An observer from the Race Committee will be posted at one end of
the line
and will take the times of all of those boats finishing within the
allowed time.
All boats must be off of the course by 1430 hours (2:30 PM).
The Race is being run on ACA Rules.
Each participant must have a USCG-approved PFD (life jacket).
Unloading
Drive up to the boat unloading area.
Immediately after unloading, move vehicle to the parking
area near the baseball diamond.
Salem Sound Coastwatch and its Race Committee
reserve the right to refuse
to register any individual or boat, and may expel or refuse
any participant or
boat before or during the event for lack of required equipment,
unsafe operation,
disregard for event rules, or unsporting behavior. |
