Date: Saturday, July 25, 2009. Races start 2 pm
(Rain date is Sunday, July 26, 2:30 pm start.)
Races: There will be two races:
- Touring Class - 2.5 mi course
- Competition Classes - 5+ mi course
Eligibility: Open to kayaks, canoes, outrigger canoes, surfskis.
Classes Include:

- Men’s Kayak
- Women’s Kayak
- Surfski
- Outrigger Canoes OC-1
- If three or more similar paddled craft enter, we will create a class for them.
Only kayaks will be eligible for awards in the Touring Class.
Prizes and Awards: Cash prizes include:
$75 1st place Men’s Kayak Competition Class
$75 1st place Women’s Kayak Competition Class
$75 1st place Surfski Competition Class
$75 1st place Outrigger Canoe Competition Class
Plus: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals for each class in Touring and Competition.
Course Description: This is an inner harbor course. See course map on swimandfin.org.
Registration:
Register online at www.active.com (there will be a small service charge) or download a registration form at www.swimandfin.org. Registration will be available at the event, but payment must be made by cash or check.
Fees:
- $30 pre-registration; $40 day of event. The entry fee is a tax deductible donation to Salem Sound Coastwatch.
- Entry fees include food, music, giveaways and cash prizes.
- Each person in a two-person boat must register and pay the fee.
- Also, if you are not a member of the American Canoe Assn, a one day membership must be purchased for $5. This membership can be purchased at the event on race day.
Note that current ACA members must bring their membership number.
Times:
Registration & Check-in - 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm; Registration closes - 1:30 pm
Mandatory Skippers Meeting - 1:40 pm
Race Starts - 2:00 pm (2:30 on rain date, Sunday June 26)
Awards – 3:30 pm
Sanctioning: Races are ACA sanctioned.
Safety Requirements: All participants must wear properly-fitting U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejackets (Personal Flotation Devices, or PFDs) at all times in the water.
Refunds: 50% of the entry fee will be refunded up to 14 days prior to the event. The on-line registration service charge will not be refunded. No refunds will be issued for any reason after 14 days. If the event is cancelled, a 50% credit will be applied to the 2010 event. Registration cannot be transferred to another person.
Rain Date: Sunday, July 26. Races will start at 2:30 pm.
Weather Announcement: In case of inclement weather, a decision will be made by 8 am on the day of the race. Call 978-741-7900, or visit www.swimandfin.org or www.salemsound.org for updates.
Free Parking
If You Bring Your Family: Families can picnic and enjoy the wooded Forest River Park. The park has 2 beaches, walking paths, playground, and facilities. Please note that if you have attended the Swim & Fin before, the full family festival is not being held this year, although Salem Sound Coastwatch will have some interesting exhibits.

Forest River Park is located near Salem State College, a few blocks from the intersection of Lafayette Street and Loring Avenue in Salem. There is a link to the map on swimandfin.org.
