The Swim & Fin Race for Salem Sound is an open water charity swim benefiting Salem Sound Coastwatch, a non-profit environmental organization working for clean water. Proceeds from this event support Salem Sound Coastwatch’s work to keep our beaches, coastal waters, salt marshes and marine habitats clean, safe and healthy for all living things.
This event is fully sanctioned by USA Swimming and US Masters Swimming. The 1 mile and 5K races will also be the Open Water Championships for New England Swimming (USA Swimming) and New England Masters Swimming.
Date and Time: Saturday, August 24, 2013 – Races start 11:30 am; Packet Pickup and Race Day Registration closes 10:45 am.
There will be three races: 500 meters, 1 mi (1.6 k), and 5K (3.1 mi).
Races are open to all ages and levels. Participants can swim in only one race.
Friday August 23, 12 pm EDT. The race field is capped at 250. Registration will be closed once the event reaches the 250 capacity. Registration must be received by Thursday, August 8, 2013 to receive custom event tee.
Race Day Registration:
Race day registration will open at 9:30 am if the race has not reached capacity. Information about race day registration will be posted on the home page of swimandfin.org the night before the event (Friday evening, August 23). There will be a $5 surcharge for race day registration. Registration closes at 10:45 am.
Sanctioning and Insurance:
This event will be sanctioned by both USA Swimming and New England Masters Swimming. All swimmers must be a member of either organization to participate. One day memberships are available to both organizations for a small fee.
$30 pre-registration; $35 on race day. Swimmers who are not members of either USA Swimming or US Masters Swimming must purchase a one-day membership to one of these organizations. Please read the following about one-day membership.
Membership Options and Fees
One day membership fees are: US Masters Swimming – $10; USA Swimming – $15.
Generally, everyone 18 and over should join US Masters Swimming, however, there some exceptions. Please consider the following in making your decision:
- If you are swimming in the 500 meter race and you want to be eligible to win an award, you must join USA Swimming. (US Masters does not give awards in the 500 meter race.) Please note that for the 500 meter race all swimmers age 17 and over will be in one age group for awards.
- If you want to wear a wetsuit and be eligible to win an award, you must be a member of US Masters. USA Swimming does not allow wetsuits for championship competitions.
- The minimum age for US Masters membership is 18.

- You can find your USMS number at www.usms.org/reg. A valid format is 1A2A-1B2B3.
- If you don’t know your USA Swimming number, we’ll track it down if you give us your full name, middle initial and date of birth.
If you are registering on race day you must bring your member card with you, or at least have your number.
Register online at racewire.com (there will be a small service charge) or you can download a registration form and mail it in. Mailed in registration forms must be received by close of business Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Payment for race day registration (if available) should be made by cash or check.

Awards will be presented immediately following the races.
The 5K race will consists of 2 laps around a 2.5 k rectangular course.
The 1 mi race consists of 1 lap around a rectangular course.
The 500 m race will be a triangular course.
There will be an in-water start for all races.
Wet Suits and Awards
USA Swimming (including one day memberships):
- No wetsuits allowed. If you choose to wear a wetsuit your times will be posted, but they will not be eligible for awards. Awards for each race will be by age group and gender. Age groups are 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, and 17+.
US Masters Swimming ( including one day memberships):
- Wetsuits are allowed. Swimmers wearing wet-suits will compete in a separate class. Minimum age for US Masters membership is 18. Award categories are by gender and age. Age groups are in 5 year age increments: 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, etc. up to 70+.US Masters does not give awards for the 500 m race.
Scoring will be electronic. Swimmers will wear neoprene ankle bracelets with computer chips.
Specially designed event t-shirts will be given to the swimmers who register by Thursday, August 8, 2013 .
Brightly colored swim caps will be provided and must be worn. Numbers will be written on the caps, swimmers’ arms (hands for those wearing wetsuits). Safety kayaks and rescue boats will be on the course for emergencies.
Mean water temperature at this time of the year is 68 degrees.
No rain date. The swim will be canceled only if absolutely necessary for the safety of the swimmers. In case of cancellation, your registration fee will become a tax-deductible donation.
Free Parking & Free Admission to Forest River Park:
The City of Salem has kindly waived admission fees to the park for this event. If necessary, overflow parking will be available .6 miles away at Salem State University’s Central Campus which is located on Loring Avenue, next to the Bertolon School of Business (directly across the street from the Salem Diner).
Bring Your Family:
Families can picnic and enjoy the wooded Forest River Park. The park has 2 beaches, walking paths, playground, and restrooms. Salem Sound Coastwatch will also have an underwater “petting zoo” with local marine life to see and touch.
About Salem, MA:
Salem is a beautiful historic coastal New England destination with many tourist attractions and interesting things to do. Swimmers will be given discount coupons to local attractions. Salem is a wonderful place to spend the day or the weekend.
